Is there a relationship between acne and suicide? Does acne really pose that much of a problem on today’s society?
The Study
A study done in New Zealand back in 2006 attempted to find out if there was a connection between acne, depression, and suicide. It surveyed about 10,000 high school students to determine the affects of acne on today’s youth. (Full story)
The Findings
The results were alarming. It was reported that about 30% or a third of all teenagers with bad acne have thought about suicide and about 10% have attempted to kill themselves! The results were unbiased across gender, race, age, and economic status. It was concluded that there was a direct connection between acne and mental health. Much having to do with self-image and peer pressure.
Conclusion
The report goes on to say that doctors who treat young adults for skin related problems have a higher sense of responsibility to not only treat their medical problems but also address the more deeper self-worth issues.
